To collect perceptual and acoustic data on each objective each objective, 60 participants were recruited. They had to carry out 51 measurements during the "warm" period (from April 2012 to September 2013) and repeat the same 51 measurements in the in the "cold" period (from October 2013 to March 2014). The mobile phone was offered to them, so that all participants all the participants had the same model, making it easier to calibrate the devices. A one-year subscription to the 3G mobile connection.
To carry out the evaluations, a mobile application application, the Cart-ASUR application, was specially developed by the BrusSense team at the Université libre de Bruxelles Université Libre de Bruxelles (VUB). The application is an extension of the NoiseTube application, which records sound levels in dB(A) from the microphone of mobile phones. The CartASUR application supplements these acoustic data with perceptual perceptual data, thanks to a questionnaire filled in by the by the participants on each of the objectives.
Each measurement was carried out as follows: The noise level was recorded for 10 minutes (change in LAeq,1s), then a perceptual questionnaire was completed.
The questionnaire consisted of three main parts:
- An overall assessment of the environment: weather conditions, sound enjoyment, visual enjoyment, etc. ;
- An assessment of the loudness of emerging sources, from 1 (low) to 11 (high);
- An evaluation of the presence time for sources that do not emerge much from the background noise, from 1 (rarely present) to 11 (continuously present).
At the end of each measurement, the participant was asked to take one or more photos of the location being assessed.
Thus, within the framework of this project, 3,409 complete measurements were collected over the course of a full year (3,409 * 10 * 60 1s sound levels + 3,409 * 15 perceptual data + 3,409).
- Une évaluation globale de l’environnement : conditions météorologiques, agrément sonore, agrément visuel… ;
- Une évaluation de l’intensité sonore pour les sources émergentes, de 1 (faible) à 11 (fort) ;

# CENSE | ||
# ANR CENSE | ||
Reducing urban noise is a societal priority. In this context, the European Directive 2002/49/EC aims to produce strategic noise maps for large cities. However, nowadays, the relevance of these maps is questionable due to significant uncertainties that are not quantified. Conversely, the deployment of noise observatories provides a more realistic description of the sound environment, but at the cost of insufficient spatial details and significant expenses. Thus, the CENSE project aims to propose a new methodology for the production of more realistic noise maps, based on the assimilation of simulated and measured data through a dense network of low-cost sensors. Beyond the production of physical indicators, the project also focuses on the characterization of sound environments. The CENSE project is a decidedly multidisciplinary project, bringing together experts in environmental acoustics, data assimilation, statistics, GIS, sensor networks, signal processing, and soundscape.
