Background

Creators, those whose vocation is to produce content that others want to consume, have existed for all of human history. Whether it be creators of visual art, music, written word or any other medium one thing has remained true: it is exceedingly difficult for those creators to support themselves on their outputs alone.

A creators ability to live off of their work is a function of two things:

  1. Access to an Audience
  2. Ability to Capture Value from an Audience

The internet, and more specifically the content platforms, have made growing these two functions easier than ever leading to a golden age where more creators can live off of and even get rich off of their work than ever before. But there are a number of problems with this model.

Problems with Content Platforms & Aggregators

Most content in this model is being funneled through just a handful of "content platforms" creating significant risks for the creators who power them namely:

  1. Platforms can de-platform at their discretion
  2. Platforms exercise monopoly control over their take rates
  3. Creators become financially reliant on the platforms
  4. Platforms Control access to a creator’s audience
  5. Control the Content Created
