Objectives

This journal covers the Data Backups Best Practices unit of the Basic course prep under the Preparatory Materials.
Time estimated: 3 h; taken 3h ; date started: 2020-02-22; date completed: 2020-03-19
The duration of this journal was actually 3 hrs, even though I started writing it a few weeks back...

Process

I've never before done a backup of all the important files on my mac, mostly because I did not think it was an urgent need. I used to regularly use another laptop which contained a lot of highly-sensitive information; I do regular backups to that one on an external hard drive, I bought (My Book, 320GB). Even though my mac does not contain much private information, it would be inconvenient if I lose several work/school related documents.

Ideally, it is best to have 2 methods of backing up, onsite and offsite. However, I have only decided to do an onsite backup using time machine and my external hard drive. I have synced configured Time Machine so that my Desktop and Documents folder is backed up whenever my external hard drive is plugged in. Files of interest are the ones under: Desktop and Documents.

Conclusions and Outlook

I specifically chose not to use any backups on the cloud because my mac does not contain that my information to be kept in the cloud. Although the cloud is reliable, there are certain risks associated when placing things out there online (hacks). I found it unnecessary to set up a cloud backing up system, just to keep a few work/school related documents.
