I've never before done a backup of all the important files on my mac, mostly because I did not think it was an urgent need. I used to regularly use another laptop which contained a lot of highly-sensitive information; I do regular backups to that one on an external hard drive, I bought (My Book, 320GB). Even though my mac does not contain much private information, it would be inconvenient if I lose several work/school related documents.
Ideally, it is best to have 2 methods of backing up, onsite and offsite. I have decided to use Time Machine to backup to an external drive and Dropbox. Files of interest are the ones under: Desktop and Documents.
