rdedup v3.0.0 Release Notes

Dawid Ciężarkiewicz edited this page Aug 1, 2018 · 5 revisions

I'm happy to announce rdedup v3.0.0!

What's new

  • incremental, generational GC
  • change in repo format
  • internal improvements

The biggest improvement is the generational GC system, allowing for incremental garbage collection. This should increase the viability of rdedup for very big data sets.

The repo format was changed, making it incompatible with the previous releases.

Future plans

Unfortunately, while this project is really useful, solid, and attracted quite a bit of attention, it's development slowed down. The main author is content with the current features, reliability and he's busy with other things. There were some people and businesses interested in picking it up and improving for applications they were interested in, but nothing materialized so far.

In a sense, v3 release is about releasing whatever is ready and letting the project be stable and useful to people that find it.

The v3 repository format is incompatible with v2, mostly because the author had no time and energy to implement it. On the plus side, the current format is more future-proof.

If you are interested in working on or using rdedup, don't worry - the project is still in great shape, and devs and users are still around. Join rdedup gitter channel and let's chat!
