simplify piping with basename and find #5

This commit simplifies a few operations.

Replaced ls -l | sed 's/.xyz//g in a couple of commands with basename -s,xyz, which is easier to type & saves an operation.
Replaced ls > file, cat file with find -exec. Also simpler and quicker to type.
