This creates the framework for utilizing a land surface model. The approach parallels what was done for moisture. Namely, an abstraction layer with runtime selectable LSM models.
The MM5 model was simplified down to theta diffusion (with constant coefficients and homogeneous Dirichlet bottom temperature). This model was used in conjuction with met_em initialization that provides land masks and SST. The MM5 updates theta where landmask is true and the flux it uses at the boundary comes from MOST. Here is the result after 100 steps (top is domain and bottom is LSM):

This seems to restart with native chk files.
