The maximum number of legal moves (also referred to as the out-degree or branching factor in more technical terms) is:
- Without considering whether it can be reached from the initial position, the maximum is 34. (Assuming the central 4 squares are not empty.)
- When only considering positions that can be legally reached from the initial position, the maximum for both white and black turns is 33.

オセロの最大分岐数（石を置けるマスの数が最大になるような局面での、その置ける数のこと）は、
- 初期局面から到達可能か考えない場合、34が最大である。（中央の4マスは空白でないことを仮定している）
- 初期局面から合法的に到達できる局面に限定すると、白番も黒番も33が最大である。
