OrientDb package for meteor

install

###Prerequisites:

I tested this on orientdb-community-2.1.rc5,

add/replace this to c:\orientInstallpath\config\orientdb-server-config.xml under

<handler class="com.orientechnologies.orient.server.plugin.livequery.OLiveQueryPlugin">
    <!-- EXPERIMENTAL FEATURE, enable at your own risk -->
    <parameters>
        <parameter name="enabled" value="true"/>
    </parameters>
</handler>
  • Start the orientDB server by running c:\orientInstallpath\bin\server.bat on windows or ~/orientInstallpath/bin/server.sh on linux
  • you will also need the provide an orientDb user and password for this demo to work, you choose them when first running the server.bat file
  • Point your browser to localhost:2480 this website is a frontend for orientDb web ui.
  • Populate the db with data running each of the lines in 'leaderboard.sql', you need to run each of them separately.
  • Add/Replace the previously mentioned user and password to the top of server/server.js like so:
var orientdb = new Meteor.LiveOrientDB({
  host: 'localhost',
  port: '2424',
  username: 'root',
  password: '12123333',
  database: 'players'
});

References

version notes

  • 21/7/2015 - I refactored out all the basic orient logic into the external package

  • 17/7/2015 - I believe I have solved the connection issues in orientjs, made a pull request at orientechnologies/orientjs#43. For now it is solved in my own package, from my tests it works perfectly meaning both the connection issues I have noticed seems to be resolved now. Also been cleaning the select code, looks much better now.

  • 8/7/2015 - it seems most of the connection i have been having are due to a bug in orientjs opend an issue here: orientechnologies/orientjs#36

  • 7/7/2015 - on that subject of ids: it seems that on rc5, when receiving an updated or new record in a live-query you are passed an object that looks like this:

{ content: { '@type': 'd', '@class': 'players', name: 'Maxwell', score: 120 }, type: 'd', cluster: 12, position: 41, version: 0 }

Iv filled an issue in orient js, since I belive this should not be solved on the application level orientechnologies/orientjs#35 so the rid can be created by joining the cluster and position parameters as described here http://orientdb.com/docs/2.0/orientdb.wiki/Tutorial-Record-ID.html for now I am solving this in the demo code.

  • 7/7/2015 - the demo does work fully now and synchronizes scores across multiple sessions using live query. it is very hacky and there are a few limitation in the orient db live query api that will make it nearly impossible to make it truly generic. orientdb live query does not return the 'rid' of the row making it necessary to make up my own generic id column (i used names in this case), this might be a bug in orientjs. it also does not return updates in the location of the returned record in an ordered query or allow for rownum as a virtual column, making it a must for the client/meteor server sort the data manually after the network boundary. also it only works using the experimental branch of orientdb so production use would not be smart

To Do

  • implent a
  • need to create a package that installs orient all by itself for deployment the mongo db installation that comes with meteor is downloaded into C:\Users\User\AppData\Local.meteor\packages\meteor-tool\1.1.3\mt-os.windows.x86_32\dev_bundle\mongodb\bin
