Current System
This is what the system looks like in its first full day in operation.
There are dials and thermostats on the sides to show the current readings of (inside) Temperature, the Goal Temperature, Outside Temperature, Humidity, the power level of the heater, and the difference between the temperature and the goal. The top graph shows the temperatures (pink inside, blue outside, yellow goal), the middle graph shows humidity, and the bottom one shows power over time.
Here we see the system is quiescent as the daytime temperature is above the goal temperature. At around midnight the temperature drops and the system starts the heater. The PID controller keeps the inside temperature right at the goal temperature (±0.2 F) by controlling the power out of the heater.
Note that the heater is only on or off. It does not really have variable power settings. We simulate variable power by turning it on for a percentage of the cycle time.
