mediacloud api_client "user_profile" endpoint returns html, not usable json (in 'api/auth/profile')

The mediacloud api client provides a 'user_profile' call, but the endpoint it hits ('api/auth/profile') returns the base view html, not user profile information. Looking at the execution path, I'm not sure exactly what's going on- maybe the login_required decorator doesn't play nice with the api call?
