Downloaded Office files cannot be opened in Nextcloud Office #12039
Comments
If you click on the three dots menu for that file you should have an Edit option. Does that still open it in the embedded (server-side) Nextcloud Office in the way you'd expect? |
Yes, Edit opens in the embedded Nextcloud Office as expected. Hm, so not a bug, I just didn't understand the UX. Close this? |
Well, there might be room for improving the user experience. I'll leave it open for the moment. |
What if I don't see an "Edit" option in the ... menu? I'm using the Dutch translation, so the name might be different. I do see an option that would translate to "Open with...", but if I select that, I get the same selection box (allowing to choose a local app) as I get when simply selecting the downloaded file in the first place. |
Hmm. For the

Scratch that, I forgot to try and scroll through the menu. 😊 The "Edit" option is present. Using it does open the remote editor. |
Thanks @thgoebel, I just figured out I should have scrolled up 🤦. |
I have the same issue as well but I do not have an edit option |
Same for me, no edit Option in the contests menu. |
🤔 Hmm... Maybe my first comment wasn't (initially) incorrect then. Maybe the "Edit" option was indeed missing at first. I have just tested with accounts on two different Nextcloud servers on the same S22 phone as before. Neither of those show an "Edit" option in the dots menu for the Both servers run Nextcloud 27.1.2 and Nextcloud Office app 8.2.0 with CODE running on a separate VM. |
The recent update to richdocuments fixed this issue for me |
I am getting the similar situation using OnlyOffice. So, if I click over the file which is NOT saved locally it is opened in the embedded OnlyOffice. However, if the file is synced (there's a green tick), the Nextcloud app suggests to open the file with installed apps (eg Google Sheet, Printiing app and others). Let's say I select and click Google Spreadsheet, and the document is not opened, instead of I see a very confusing message: Couldn't open the document Normally this should not happen. Why the file cannot be opened with the local app, if it is already on my local device? Of course, if I click three-dots and click Edit, the file will be opened in the embedded OnlyOffice. |
Steps to reproduce
Expected behaviour
The file should open in Nextcloud Office/Collabora.
Or at least it should give me the option between Nextcloud Office and locally installed apps.
Actual behaviour
The test.ods attempts to be opened with a locally installed app.
In my case, the two apps that are offered are Termux and a plaintext Notes app.
Even if this is the expected behaviour - it is confusing to the user and there should be clearer guidance (= an option to choose).

As a workaround, I can delete the downloaded file (... > Delete > Local only). After that, the test.ods opens in Nextcloud Office again.
