One type of music that does not use a sound chip, but is still often discussed under the topic of chip music, is the PC buzzer. A series of computers, including the ZX Spectrum, Apple II, and IBM PC without a sound card, do not come standard with a sound chip, but have a buzzer that can be programmed and controlled to output sound.
## 1-Bit: "Chip Music" without a sound chip
There is a type of music does not use a sound chip, but is still often discussed under the topic of chip music. "1-Bit" or "beeper" music is produced by a CPU directly controlling a beeper. A series of computers, including the ZX Spectrum, Apple II, and IBM PC without a sound card, do not come standard with a sound chip, but have a beeper that can be programmed and controlled to output sound.

The function of the buzzer on these computers depended entirely on CPU performance, and on models with weaker CPU performance, the buzzer could often only be controlled to emit a simple ticking sound, as represented by the early PC music editing program EA Music Construction Set on the buzzer.
The name "1-bit" comes from the way beeper is controlled by the CPU: the beeper has only two states, on and off, and controlled by a 1-bit register. This type of operation often consumes all the processing power of an 8-bit microprocessor. Therefore, from this perspective, the sound chip in 1-bit music is the CPU of the corresponding computer platform.

However, when using an Intel 486 or faster CPU, it was possible to use the buzzer to play digital audio; with a Pentium or higher CPU, the buzzer could also play back digital audio with a higher sample rate, and could even be used to listen to MP3s.
The platform where 1-bit beeper music was highly developed and became an important part of chip music is the ZX Spectrum. In the mid-1980s, pulse-width modulation (PWM) was used to produce multiple polyphonic voices in the ZX Spectrum.
