Tapestry Moana Demo
===================

This project includes the changes needed to get the Moana demo to run under a
Tapestry web server architecture.


Prerequisites
-------------

In the local directory should be 3 files:

- embree-3.5.0.x86_64.linux.tar.gz
- ispc-v1.9.1-linux.tar.gz
- moana-ospray-demo.tgz

The rest of the files are included with the repository:

- server/
- 1/
- 2/
- Dockerfile
- go.sh

Additionally, it's helpful to have the existing source code for comparison:

Project Structure
-----------------

The 1/ and 2/ directories include changes to files in the base archive. These
are numbered so that subsequent Docker builds are a little faster. In
particular, the way we build is:

1. Install dependencies
2. Build the given source code
3. Build changes from the 1/ directory.
4. Build changes from the 2/ directory.
5. Copy remaining code that doesn't need to build.

The 1/ directory changes the Camera.h scene graph file to include imageStart
and imageEnd children so they can be modified by the Moana OSPApp.

The 2/ directory changes ospMoanaViewer.cpp and modifies it into a stdin-stdout
program. Rendering requests come via stdin in a simplified format
(space-delimited floats and integers) and responses are written out in
netstring format (length of data, a colon, the data, and a comma). This is so
that we don't need to manage the HTTP server in C/C++ and can use Python as an
HTTP server.

The server/ directory contains the Python HTTP wrapper server. It listens for
requests in the Tapestry format (example below), encodes this in the simplified
format, sends it to the ospMoanaViewer subprocess, waits for a response, and
sends it to the client. It also listens for static file requests to send the
demo HTML page and the Tapestry client-side JavaScript library. The URLs are in
the following format::

  /image/:scene/:x/:y/:z/:ux/:uy/:uz/:vx/:vy/:vz/:quality/tiling,:index-:numtiles

  /image/island/1.0/2.0/4.0/0.0/1.0/0.0/-1.0/-2.0/-4.0/256/tiling,1-4

The former is the format used, the latter is an example using that format. It
stands for:

- I want to use the island scene (note: currently :scene is ignored, but this
  is what it will do)

- I want to the camera at position <1.0, 2.0, 4.0> in world space.

- I want the camera's up vector to be <0.0, 1.0, 0.0>

- I want the camera's view vector to be <-1.0, -2.0, -4.0> (i.e. towards the
  origin in this example, but it can be anything)

- I want the returned image to be 256x256 pixels large

- I want the 2nd (0-indexed) tile if we split the image into 4 equal pieces.
  The :numtiles should be in the form x^2, so 1, 4, 9, and 16 are good. We
  typically use 4 because this works well in browsers.

The HTTP response will be in JPEG format. If a particular tile is requested,
they can be stitchlessly combined to make the full image (already handled by
Tapestry client-side code).


Usage
-----

To build the server, use the convenience script `go.sh`. In particular::

  $ # Build the docker image
  $ ./go.sh build

  $ # Edit the data= line
  $ vi go.sh

  $ # Run the docker image
  $ ./go.sh run python3.7 -u server.py --port 8861 ./kava.sh

Connect to the server on the given port, for instance: http://localhost:8861/


Docker Swarm
------------

To set up a Docker Swarm service (i.e. to use multiple servers), you can use::

  $ # Edit the registry= line to point to your Docker registry
  $ vi go.sh

  $ # Push your image to the registry
  $ ./go.sh push

  $ # Create your service
  $ ./go.sh create

  $ # Test it here, http://localhost:8860/

  $ # Scale up your service
  $ ./go.sh scale 10

  $ # Test again

  $ # Check logs
  $ ./go.sh logs

  $ # Destroy the service
  $ ./go.sh destroy
