############################################################################################################ About Genalyze: Genalyze is developed as a troubleshooting tool to help the Gentoo community further support users by gathering system information relating to the machine in question. In short it will paste your system information to a public pastebin site. You may choose to run genalyze in one of 3 modes (interactive, non-interactive, or manual) *Interactive mode: This mode is invoked by the -i switch. In this mode the user will be prompted with simple questions pertaining to each test that will be ran. *Non-interactive mode: This mode will perform all tests, and will not prompt user for any input. *Manual mode: In this mode the user will specify the -w switch followed by a list of modules (space seperated) that he/she wishes to perform a test on. <See Usage below for more details> This tool does not make any changes to the file system other than generating txt files for the user to reference. The concept is to assist the troubleshooters in obtaining information they need in order to resolve the issue at hand. This will generate lots of information regarding the system when ran in non-interactive mode. All modules will be ran when running in non-interactive mode. If a user wishes to be asked which modules to use then the need to ask the user to do each individual step to obtain information one step at a time. The idea is to decrease the amount of time it takes to find and eliminate possible problems the user is experiencing. Genalyze is developed for troubleshooting of Gentoo installs, however this is not only limited to Gentoo, we are also incorporating support for Sabayon and Funtoo, so feel free to test on those distributions. If you are interested in contributing, or you have an idea/suggestion, pleasejoin us on Freenode IRC in the channel #gentoo-genalyze. We appreciate your support and hope you find this tool useful. ############################################################################################################ Ebuild: Genalyze is not currently in portage or in any overlay's however you are encouraged to add a local port overlay and test the ebuild which is in the ebuild/ directory in the tarball please bring it to the genalyze developer's attention any problems you may experience while trying to use the ebuild, so we can get it into portage sooner :) ############################################################################################################ Usage: Syntax: genalyze [options] Options: -h, --help Display this message and exit -i, --interactive Ask questions, ask for optional actions -o, --omit <module_identifiers> Do not execute specified modules -w, --with-only <module_identifiers> Execute explicitly only these modules -r, --read-only Only display the file with information, don't upload -l, --list List available modules and exit -c, --report-comments Do not remove comments (#'s) from the reported files -C, --clean Remove all report files created by the script ############################################################################################################ ** Standard modules <module identifier> :: <module description> :: <command executed by module> consolekit :: Consolekit Session Information :: ck-list-sessions cpuinfo :: CPU Information :: cat /proc/cpuinfo dbus :: DBUS Session Information :: echo $DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS distro :: Distribution Release Information :: cat_file /etc/*release* du :: Disk Usage & Statistics :: df -hT fstab :: Fstab Settings :: cat_file /etc/fstab hardware :: PCI Hardware :: lspci -k hostname :: Hostname :: echo $HOSTNAME kernel :: Kernel in use :: eselect kernel list makeconf :: Settings from /etc/make.conf :: cat_file /etc/make.conf memory :: Memory Usage :: free -mt modules :: Kernel Modules Currently Loaded :: lsmod mounted :: Mounted Filesystems :: mount -l portage :: General Portage Information :: emerge --info profiles :: Display of Portage Profiles :: eselect profile list pstree :: Process Tree :: pstree -A rc_status :: RC Run Level Settings :: rc-status udev :: UDEV Rules :: ls -1 /etc/udev/rules.d/ uname :: General Information about the System :: uname -a username :: Username :: echo $USER ############################################################################################################ ** User-confirmed modules <module identifier> :: <module description> :: <command executed by module> dns :: DNS Servers :: cat_file /etc/resolv.conf exported :: Exported shell variables :: export ifconfig :: Network status :: ifconfig logins :: Users Logged In, Uptime and System Load :: uptime route :: Routing Tables :: route ############################################################################################################ ** General questions with text answer to upload <module identifier> :: <module description> :: <question asked by module> wm :: Window Manager/DE Info :: what Desktop environment and/or Window manager are you using ############################################################################################################ Security Concerns: Some users may be concerned that their system information shouldn't be shared publicly. This is understandable to the developers of Genalyze too. We are providing users the option to paste their information to a public pasting service, or if they wish to provide the information to others by a different method the user can simply choose not to upload the information. The system information can be found in /tmp the filename containing the information will be genalyze_{TIMESTAMP}.txt where {TIMESTAMP} refers to the date + time the information was generated. ############################################################################################################# Questions, Comments, and/or Concerns: You may contact us on Freenode IRC (irc.freenode.net) in the channel #gentoo-genalyze *Please don't ask questions regarding the use of Genalyze in #gentoo as this script is not officially supported by #gentoo at this time. However feel free to share your output of Genalyze anywhere you need support for your gentoo based system :) Enjoy!! ############################################################################################################
