For posterity, the failure with the osx metapackage build (from the original commit) was related to functionality that was missing from the pillow dependency. I pinned pillow to 9.4.0, which is the version that was present for all subsequent metapackages (up to this Prepare). Not sure if this is a great permanent solution because we're pinning another external dependency, but it at least got us a working metapackage that'll get us through the release builds.
