This guide assumes you're using lidar point cloud data. One format is LAS, but often are distributed as LAZ (compressed LAS files) which need tools to extract that can be found HERE
I accessed my lidar data from the Oregon Lidar Consortium for the Portland Metro 2014 data set hosted graciously by the NOAA HERE
Once you've extracted your .laz files to .las you need to create an LAS dataset in arcmap
Right click in catalog, add new las dataset
- LAS files Tab: Add LAS Files or folders
- Surface Constraint: Set surface constraints
- Statistics: Calculate to make it run faster
- XY Coordinate System: Specify xy coordinate system (NAD83)
- Z Coordinate System: NAVD88
