Consolidating GPS Logs

GPS logs can be helpful in developing access routes and roads, but it is often inaccurate and a tad messy so the data needs to be cleaned up a bit. I'll detail a few workflows and tools for how that can be done.

Consolidate Feature classes

  • Merge multiple features classes into the same feature class

  • Dissolve so any overlaps are taken care of.

  • Integrate to consolidate multiple lines into one (I used a 35 ft tolerance)

  • If you turned your lines into multiparts with dissolve, you can use multipart to single part to split them back into individual segments.

  • Check Geometry and Repair Geometry

  • If you want to further generalise your data you can use Simplify Line (note that ArcMap 10.2 has a bug where you can't set your simplification tolerance unless you run it as a batch geoprocess.)
