We are Slow Roll Chicago and we're creating an app that examines the distribution of bicycle infrastructure (specifically bike lanes) in the City of Chicago.
Definitely check out the README, but generally we believe that the investment and distribution of bike lanes across the city hasn't been equitable. It may have been distributed geographically equally, but it hasn't been done in a way that's fair to all communities of Chicago.
The city has several, discrete goals:
- Reduce the number of crashes and injuries from 2006 levels by 50% by 2015
- Increase the share of trips under 5 miles by bicycle to be 5%
- Install a bike lane within 1/2 (half) mile of every Chicagoan
The issue with focusing on these goals in the way that they're written is that you can achieve those goals without raising up every Chicagoan.
