1817DE is a short variant of 1817 as such it shares most of the same rules as 1817. The major exception is that no short sales are allowed. The map is an abstracted and simplified map of Germany. The differences beyond the map are:

• There is no "Pittsburgh" private company.
• Less seed money for the IPO
  • Seed money is $100 instead of the $200 in base 1817
• Fewer privates
  • (Mail Contract, Minor Mail Contract, Major Coal Mine, and one Bridge Company are removed)
• Fewer corporations
  • (Down to 15 from 20)
• There is no NY tile. Instead a series of OO tiles are used (along with the normal B tiles).
• Fewer trains

The basic game setup is currently the same as 1817NA, but with no short sales allowed, the strategies should be much different.
